We visited a new church yesterday. As with visiting most new places, you don't see everything you need when you first walk in. At this church I didn't see a nursery or a cry room. The service started and we sang the first song. All was fine--no crying from the baby or crazy behavior from Madeleine. After the first song, the pastor asked us to take a moment and greet those around us. I shook hands with the lady behind me and she mentioned that there was a nursery just down the hall and her 2 year-old daughter was in there. Thank goodness she mentioned it.
All was fine until the next song started. Then Madeleine loudly starts saying "EIEIO. I want EIEIO." I had brought her pacifier (just for moments like this). So I handed that to her, I mistakenly thought this would help. I also got out her books and colors.
The next song started. Out came the pacifier and she started repeatedly saying "I want HIJK o'Mommy (her name for the ABC song)." I couldn't get her to stop. And she didn't understand why the church pianist wouldn't play Old MacDonald or the ABC song. Thank goodness the lady had told me where the nursery was!
In the end, Madeleine had a great time eating animal crackers and playing with the 4 or 5 other 2 year olds in the nursery. And all the attendees and I were able to enjoy a peaceful service. One funny thing I noticed was that the only children in the nursery were between the ages of 18 months and 3. All the other younger and older children were sitting quietly in church.
