The problem with being a parent...

Most of the time I really enjoy being a parent. Heck, I don't even mind the bad parts of being a parent (like changing diapers and being puked on). Every rational person knows that parenting has its ups and downs. But I didn't expect my kids to take away all of the small joys in life.

Take tonight at supper for example. We ordered pizza. As we are sitting there eating Madeleine points to my pizza and says "I want that." I told her that she already had a piece sitting on her plate. "No, its all gone" she says as she simultaneously holds up her crustless piece while jabbing her finger into my pizza's crust. She wants my crust--the best part of the pizza--the part I save until last so that I can savor it.

And it doesn't end with destroying my pizza. She wants to lick the bowl after I make cake. She demands the last bite of ice cream. She wanted to eat all of her chocolate Halloween candy! She likes butterscotch hard candies!!! She wants the good, cuddly blanket that we keep in the living room. And now Miriam is getting in on the act--just the other day she threw an absolute fit when I ate the last of my ice cream.

I have had to take desperate measures--I make dessert after they go to bed, I have a personal stash of candy, and, now, I may have to resort to eating my pizza in secret! Ohhhh, the injustice of it all.
