About 6 weeks ago, Joel and I were sitting around talking about the kids and things. And Joel, off-handedly, mentioned that Madeleine would soon be starting to ask "why?" about everything. Well I think that she must have overheard that conversation. It seems like that day or the next she started asking "Why?" about everything.
I greatly underestimated how annoying this was going to be. I expected this to be a semi-fun phase--I could tell them silly reasons why and mess with their mind a little. That part is still a little fun. But before kids, I assumed that they would ask why, then I could explain it, and they would only ask "why" about something 4 or 5 times before they were satisfied with the answer.
Wow, was I ever wrong. So far, Madeleine has asked me "Why are we stopped?" (when we are at a red light) 235,397 times--this week. OK. Maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration but it isn't a big exaggeration. She then goes on to ask, "Why is the light red? Why do we have to wait for the other cars? Why do the police say that we do?" I have started pulling up to red lights and automatically saying, "Wearestoppedataredlightinfrontofme.Itisredsothattheothercarshavea
turntogo.Wehavetowaitforthemtogobecausethepolicesayso.Theywantustodrivesafe."
Then there are those times when I get tired of answering why. Like 8:30 at night when she is supposed to be asleep. Or when we are in the line at the grocery store and she asks some way inappropriate question (like, "Why do my buggers tastes so funny?" as she is jamming her finger up her nose). But on the whole it isn't so bad. She is curious and smart and that comes with a price tag. :-)
