Writing about my kids

I originally started this little blog almost 10 years ago with the singular intent of keeping my family up to date on all the awesomeness that was my kids. At the time, I only had two sweet girls and they were babies. And I was in LOVE with them and obsessed with them and I thought everyone else should be also.

The problem is those helpless, adorable babies grew up to be independent humans. And I came to the simple truth--that kind of obsession (which is so important to have with a tiny baby) is just unsustainable and, frankly, unhealthy for them and me.

I also realized that since my girls are independent human beings their lives aren't totally mine to share. I really have no right to lay claim to their story like I did when they were babies. Their story is theirs to tell now.

But I still have a story to tell. A lot of my story still involves those three silly girls. Another huge chunk of my story is about me learning how to navigate this crazy world as a mom of three girls. But I also like to tell stories about other things outside of my role as a parent.

Hopefully this site can handle evolving into something more than just a repository for our great family memories. I thought about starting a new site on which I could share my stories. But, the thing is, that after 10 years, I still identify myself as the Quirky Scribe. No other site felt right. So here goes...the QuirkyScribe is evolving!

Madeleine's First Basketball Game

Madeleine had her first basketball game today! We can't say if they won or lost (they don't keep score at this age and honestly neither team made many baskets). They did an awesome job. Her team was very aggressive and stole the ball numerous times.

Joel is the coach and he had a great time. He was hoarse afterwards from yelling out encouragement and directions.

Madeleine and her game face! I wouldn't mess with her.

Miriam has caught on to my tricks

Miriam's new favorite word is "Why?" Why is that car red? Why is the sun so hot [she means bright--she is covering her eyes]? Why did it snow? Why is Jesus in heaven?

Basically my day is a constant barrage of questions. Madeleine also did this but not to the extent of Miriam. But then again Miriam talks CONSTANTLY--so she creates lots more opportunities for questions.

I try to give answers to most of her questions, but when I have to answer about a hundred or more a day, I start running out of answers. So I occasionally answer with "I don't know" or "Because." Well Miriam is on to me. She is no longer satisfied with my vague answers. Now, when she asks "why" she ends with "and don't say because or I don't know." Well, what if I don't know! Life is so tough with kids.

P.S. -- Check back tomorrow. Joel and I have been working hard on our new flooring since yesterday afternoon. We should be finished tomorrow afternoon. I will post some pictures of our work--it is looking fantastic!

Parenting Lessong #262

If you are potty training a toddler and you smell poop some place other than the bathroom, be afraid, be very afraid.

Parenting Lesson #263
When you are potty training, you should keep a box of diaper wipes and a container Lysol disinfecting wipes on hand at all times.
