Today I took the girls to the mall to get their picture made. It was a rough expedition. Miriam was oddly cranky and cried for 80-90% of the pictures. Madeleine was being ornery, and she decided to do the opposite of everything the photographer and I asked. By the time it was over I was about to the end of my rope--I could have lost it at the drop of a hat.
While I was waiting to pay, another mom walked up. Her kids were about the same age as the girls. While we were making small talk, she turned to me and said, "I don't know how you do it. You look so calm. But I am completely overwhelmed by bringing my kids out to get their picture taken." I almost couldn't keep myself from laughing. I had been thinking the same thing about her.
Hearing her comment made me feel so much better. I have always wondered how other mothers raise multiple kids without going insane. Do they know some trick that I don't? Are they all heavily medicated? But the truth is that they are probably just walking around looking like they have it all together. In reality, they are just one dirty diaper away from an extended stay in the psyche ward.
My logical side tells me that it must get easier. As the kids get older, life will calm down a little and I will slowly get a grip on it. I mean, it has to get easier, or all moms would be warning their daughters to never have a second kid--and you just don't hear of that happening to often. Plus, if it didn't get easier, you wouldn't have large families with 5 and 6 kids. But until that time comes, if you happen to see my eye twitching or I start sounding a bit delirious, grab the kids and call the loony bin, because I have lost it :-)
