Conversations with a 2 year-old

Miriam and I were alone in the car yesterday and had the following conversation:

Miriam: When we get a new car, I want one like that.
Me: What?!
Miriam: When our car breaks and we have to get a new one, I want one like that. Or like that one [as she points to another car].
Me: Well our car isn't going to break for a long time.
Miriam: But when it does I want one like that. [then she pointed out a few other ones she liked]
Miriam: But I want a red car. Red cars are the best.
Me (with a quizzical look on my face): You are so strange.


So what is so strange about this conversation?
1. This is exactly what she said--I didn't add words so that it made sense, I didn't correct poor grammar, she didn't slur any words (she enunciated very clearly).

2. We have never had any conversations about getting a new car. The closest we had was a few weeks ago when Madeleine asked why we stop at red lights. I explained that if we didn't stop, other cars might run into us. Madeleine then correctly assumed that a wreck would break our car and we would need a new one. But this conversation was several weeks ago and we hadn't discussed it since. In fact, at the time of this conversation, we were discussing a song on the radio.

3. She is 2. She isn't even 2 1/2 yet. To be exact she is 29 months old. It is a very strange and well thought out conversation for a 2 year old. And she talks so well. I think that is just part of being a younger child. Madeleine didn't talk this well until she was about 3 1/2.

The funny thing about Miriam is that she is like this ALL DAY. When it is just she and I, we have an almost constant conversation about her observations and games. The funny thing is that you have to respond correctly or she will keep repeating her previous statement (I think that she has an idea of how she wants the conversation to proceed so she needs the correct response to keep it going). This can be rather frustrating because it sometimes takes me 4-5 tries to figure out the response she wants.
